Conditions for obtaining Turkish citizenship through marriage

The conditions for obtaining Turkish citizenship through marriage by foreign nationals are regulated in accordance with Article 16 of Citizenship Law No. 5901. The marriage of a foreigner with a Turkish citizen does not automatically give that foreigner the right to become a Turkish citizen. Syrians who are under temporary protection do not have the right to become Turkish citizens through marriage.
According to the relevant law, foreign nationals with a residence permit to obtain citizenship through their spouse must meet the following conditions:

1. A foreigner who applies for citizenship has been married to a Turkish citizen for at least 3 years and the marriage continues. 2. Joining spouses in a family union; 3. A foreigner does not act contrary to a marriage contract. 4. A foreigner in circumstances It does not threaten public safety.
Foreign nationals who marry a Turkish citizen, if they meet all the above conditions, can apply for citizenship by contacting the governor of their city of residence. However, if the spouse who is a citizen of Turkey dies after the date of applying for citizenship, the condition of "living in the unity of the spouses' family" does not apply in the above-mentioned conditions. Foreigners who have the right to Turkish citizenship can apply for Turkish citizenship whenever they want.

Does Turkish citizenship end with divorce? If a person who has obtained Turkish citizenship through marriage wants to divorce his Turkish wife for any reason, his citizenship will continue in the same way. The dissolution of the marriage does not affect his citizenship. If the Turkish spouse dies, will the right to citizenship be lost? A foreigner has the right to become a Turkish citizen, provided that he has been married to a Turkish person for at least 3 years. The initiative to use this right is left to him. You can apply for Turkish citizenship on the day you receive this right or after 10 years you can apply for Turkish citizenship through marriage. If a foreigner dies without using this right, the right of Turkish citizenship continues for the foreigner.
Does the foreign spouse have to reside in Turkey? The foreign spouse does not need to reside in Turkey to obtain Turkish citizenship. The marriage can be continued in the desired place outside of Turkey, and after the end of 3 years, you can apply for Turkish citizenship.
